I was invited to create a piece as part of Lee Campbell Projects, Speedy Gonzales at the Oubliette Arthouse (former Mexican embassy). The brief was to create a work lasting 10 seconds only. The thumbnail image shows the process from conception to performance. I decided to use the image of Speedy Gonzales from the flyer for the event and convert the image pixels into audio frequencies. The Spectrogram illustrates the structure of the sound over 10 seconds. Applying various filters, I came up with an architectural map of locations where I would position an array of speakers during the performance. A series of audio samples were taken over 10 seconds and pre-composed to play on speakers around the room. At the same time, I played a live customised electronic toy instrument, using a graphite drawing based on the Fourier Transform distribution map (of the spectrogram) as points or ‘keys’ to be ‘played’. Interests here concern synesthetic responses and the relationships between reproduction and representation.
